The melody was composed by Adam Levine, Ammar Malik, Ryan Tedder, Benny Blanco and Noel Zancanella, and delivered by the last three. Blanco and Malik have already cooperated with Maroon 5 on the tunes "Moves like Jagger" and "Payphone", while Tedder and Zancanella have worked with the gathering on the melodies "Love Somebody" and "Fortunate Strike". "Maps" is an up-beat pop shake track, made in the key out of C ♯ minor (with the fundamental harmony movement of A–B–C#m - both in the verses and the theme - and F#m–G#m-G#7 in the pre-ensemble), that contains a "blustery guitar lick". It marks Maroon 5's further takeoff from the funkier sound for which the band was initially known. The authority remix highlights another verse from Big Sean and new generation beats.

Melodiously, the tune is about "the search for love, particularly a love that has been lost and needs to be found".In the chorale, Adam Levine sings "Every one of the streets you took returned to me/So I'm taking after the guide that prompts you.
