"Only
Girl (In the World)" is a single by Barbadian singer Rihanna from her 5-th
album, Loud (2010). The album's best single, it was recorded on September 10.
Crystal Johnson composed the
song in collaboration with producers Stargate and
Sandy Vee. Rihanna contacted Stargate before Loud's production and asked them
to create lively, uptempo music. "Only Girl (In the World)" was the debut
single composed for the album, and the singer decided to include it on the music
list before she written her vocals. Backed by strong bass and synthesizer, it
is a Europop music that incorporates elements of Hi-NRG and rave in its
composition. In its lyrics, singer demands physical attention from her funs.
Critical
response to "Only Girl (In the World)" was positive; a number of
critics praised its composition and Rihanna's decision to move away from the
dark themes of her previous album, Rated R (2009). The music reached number 1
on the United States' Billboard Hot 100 chart 2 weeks after Loud's 2-nd single,
"What's My Name?", peaked at number 1. It was the first time in the
chart's history that an album's best song reached number 1 after its 2-nd
single. In the United Kingdom the track spent 2 weeks at number 1 and is the 19-th-bestselling
song of all time by a female singer, with over a 1 000000 copies sold. The single
peaked at number 1 in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Ireland, and reached
the top 5 in France, Germany and Switzerland.
