Jakob Jerlström and produced by the latter 2 under the production name The Struts. The singer self-released the single under the title "Habits" on 25 March 2013 as her 2-nd song. After Lo was signed to Universal Music, the song was re-recorded on 6 December 2013 under the title of "Habits (Stay High)" as both the 2-nd song from Truth Serum and the best song from Queen of the Clouds. Musically, it is a pop and electropop single which features a minimal and upbeat electronic instrumentation. Its lyrics detail the ariist's attempts to forget her previous significant other through drinking and other hedonistic practices. Consequently, some critics and Lo herself noted a contrast between the song's production and its lyrical content.
